I know about you.
You teach the truth and bring light.
I follow You, Lord.
-Luke 5:1-11
While reading the book of John this morning I realized I've inferred something in John 1 that isn't written. John 1:35-44 tell of the first time Jesus met Simon Peter. I inferred that Peter followed Jesus from that day, but that's not written in the scripture. I knew this wasn't how Peter was called in the other gospels, so I went back and read the verses in John again. It says:
"These two men followed Jesus after they heard about him from John. One of the men was Andrew. He was Simon Peter's brother. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother, Simon. He said to Simon, 'We have found the Messiah.' ('Messiah' means 'Christ.')What happens here is Simon's brother Andrew becomes a follower of Jesus and he introduces Simon to Jesus. There must have been some mutual liking between the two because Jesus gives Simon a nickname - Peter. But there's no mention of Jesus saying, "Follow me," to Peter at this time like He does in the very next verse when He meets Philip. Peter's call to follow Jesus comes after a sermon by the sea of Galilee when Jesus used Peter's boat as a floating pulpit and afterwards blessed Peter and his business partners with a miraculous catch of fish!
Then Andrew took Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at Simon and said, 'You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas.' ('Cephas' means 'Peter.')
The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him. 'Follow me.' Philip was from the town of Bethsaida, where Andrew and Peter lived."
-John 1:40-44 (EB)
When Simon Peter saw what had happened, he bowed down before Jesus and said, "Go away from me, Lord. I am a sinful man!"A progression in Peter's relationship with Jesus is condensed in these gospel accounts:
...Jesus said to Simon, "Don't be afraid. From now on you will be fishermen for men." When the men brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed Jesus.
-Luke 5:8-10 (EB)
I've met you. (John 1:42)
I like you. (John 1:42)
I respect you and take your advice. (Luke 5:3-5)
I acknowledge you are Lord. (Luke 5:8)
I follow you. (Luke 5:11)
How far has your relationship with Jesus progressed? Is He an acquaintance you know through a friend or family member? Is He someone you look to for help or advice when you're in a tough spot? Or is He your Lord and Savior? Where ever you currently are, take your relationship with Jesus to the next level. It just gets sweeter and sweeter. Matthew 4:18-22
